Cyan’s Story

After a family river rafting trip, 17-year old Cyan noticed a small bump on the inside of her right thigh. Weeks went by but the bump remained. At this point, she and her parents decided to get the bump checked out. After many tests and scans she was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue sarcoma.

Cyan underwent three months of treatment and then a surgery to remove the tumor, which was successful! She continued treatment until the end of May 2025 when she received her last infusion. Throughout her entire journey the whole family has had very little contact with anyone in order to protect her. Cyan’s mom says “it was like experiencing the pandemic all over again.”

At the beginning of the 2024 school year Cyan was assigned a home hospital teacher. Despite the challenge of not being able to physically go to school and trying to keep up with studies while undergoing treatment, Cyan has maintained a 4.45 GPA and was accepted to UCLA where she will be able to attend in the fall!

Cyan’s medical team did everything they could to ensure Cyan’s blood count was up to par for her to safely be able to attend her high school graduation. Her family and closest friends were able to celebrate with a bbq gathering in the park! Cyan’s story reminds all of us to stay focused - may your circumstances be your motivation rather than your excuse to keep chasing your goals!
