Oskar’s Story
In late February, it was discovered that Oskar had a large tumor on his right kidney. In early March, he went into a 9 hour surgery to have his right kidney and tumor removed. Once removed, the pathology results on the tumor revealed that it was a malignant WILMS tumor. In addition, further testing revealed that the tumor did not metastasize and was caught early giving Oskar a positive prognosis. After surgery, Oskar started chemotherapy. After 25 weeks of chemotherapy, his last infusion was on September 9th! On September 28th, Oskar and his parents met with his oncologist to learn results from his September scans and testing. They were thrilled to hear everything came back negative for any signs of cancer cells or other abnormalities. At the end of the appointment Oskar got to ring the bell signifying the end of active treatment! Moving forward, Oskar will have quarterly visits with his oncologist to review bloodwork, CT scans and the occasional echo cardiogram. After a couple of years the testing will transition to a much less frequent pattern.
Despite Oskar’s summer being anchored with chemotherapy infusions every three weeks, he and his family made those most of it by doing lots of fun things! They enjoyed several camping road trips, attended a few professional sports games and live music concerts, plus, he participated in weekly cooking and art classes. Oskar remained positive and energetic about life! Oskar wanted his shirt to represent this “summer of rebuilding”. Staying upbeat despite his circumstances and continuing to create fun in between treatments!
Currently, Oskar is back in the swing of things at school, playing Little League Baseball and SF League Soccer. He’s been doing really well physically and emotionally. Despite all he has been through in the last eight months, Oskar has been a positive light, full of energy and helping to show his family how to navigate the unknown!
