Gracie & Jackson’s Story

Gracie & Jackson’s story as written by the Field family, themselves:

In May of 2023, our lives changed forever. At just six weeks old, our son Jackson looked a little jaundiced. What we thought might be harmless newborn yellowing turned out to be far more serious—he was on the verge of liver failure. Admitted to the PICU, he endured countless tests, transfusions, and a bone marrow biopsy before we received the diagnosis: Primary Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

HLH is a rare, life-threatening disease where the immune system never shuts off, attacking the body’s own blood and organs. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant, especially risky for infants. Jackson began intensive steroids and chemotherapy at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City to keep the disease under control until he was strong enough for transplant.

By God’s grace, Jackson made it through. Now 2½ years old, he is the joyful, curious toddler we always dreamed of—running, talking, eating heartily, and exploring the world. You would never know the challenges he’s endured.

In January 2025, we welcomed his sister, Gracie Ann. Like her brother, she inherited the HLH genetics. At only 25 days old, she went into a dangerous flare and was life-flighted to Primary Children’s. She endured a code blue, emergency intubation, and a difficult PICU stay before beginning the same treatment path as Jackson.

Gracie’s journey was further complicated by a blood clot in her brain prior to transplant. Still, she pressed on with incredible strength. On July 23, she received her new cells—donated by her father—and for about 50 days her course was relatively smooth. Then, without warning, she suffered rapid respiratory failure and had to be placed on ECMO, a form of life support.

Despite her medical battles, Gracie radiated joy. Always smiling, cooing, and delighting in walks and snuggles, she carried a light that touched everyone she met. She was a warrior wrapped in softness, a delicate soul who loved deeply and fought fiercely.

On September 18, 2025, after seven unforgettable months, Gracie was called home to the Lord. Though her time was short, her impact was immeasurable. Her light lives on in Jackson and in every heart she touched.
